What is a Multilingual Internet?
The term “multilingual” refers to any content provided in more than one language. For the internet, for example, a person can develop a multilingual website if they reside in a specific city and want a .भारत domain that is in their native language, such as someone in Kerala who may want their content to be available in Malayalam. Traditionally internet content was available predominantly in English, making it impossible to register a domain name in one’s native tongue and hence leverage the power of the Internet. But now that ICANN, the global body regulating the DNS for the Internet, has taken the initiative, it is feasible to register domain names in any global/Indian and reach a larger targeted audience by using a bilingual website that the end user can read and understand and reach a larger audience by using a bilingual website.
Let’s face it, not everyone can understand English as a language. The majority of those who utilise online services do so in their native language, and more than 85% of people in the world have access to the Internet. NIXI is working towards enabling people from remote locations and different socioeconomic backgrounds to access the multilingual Internet in India, a nation with many unique languages and communities.
Thanks to Internationalised Domain Names (IDNs), people from all over the world can use domain names in their native languages and scripts. IDNs consist of characters from several scripts, such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, and Devanagari. These are utilised in compliance with the relevant IDN protocols and encoded in line with Unicode guidelines.
ICANN developed the IDN Programme to assist in the development and promotion of a multilingual Internet using IDNs. The creation and implementation of IDN top-level domains (TLDs), including generic IDN TLDs and IDN country-code TLDs, is the main focus of the initiative. The IDN Programme also provides funding for efforts that adhere to suggestions made by the community for the effective application of IDNs at the second level of the Domain Name System.
The origin of a multilingual internet
The multilingual internet was originally introduced during the first World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), sponsored by the United Nations in 2003. At a time when our honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji is making a strong case for speaking up for local issues, India must work towards making the multilingual Internet a reality.
If a business or brand wants to expand its global clientele while maintaining an online presence, its primary marketing tactic should be to have a bilingual website. Since most users are more comfortable looking up content on the Internet in their local language, creating multilingual websites ought to be a top business decision for all businesses.
Why does one need a multilingual website?
According to research, the number of Indian internet users is expected to increase by 45% in the next five years to 900 million in 2025 from around 622 million in 2020, according to the IAMAI-Kantar ICUBE 2020 report. With the availability of multilingual websites, users can be given a more personalised and engaging experience.
Connect with the global audience!!
Connecting with users in their own language is always a smart idea and helps increase visitors to one’s site. A bilingual website for this helps you rank better in search engines in the country. A successful multilingual website can get you a lot of amazing outcomes. Any content that is multilingual enables you to reach audiences in hard-to-reach towns and cities as the language on the site is user-friendly and in their native script. Invariably, people comprehend concepts best in their native tongue. As a result, the multilingual website is a force multiplier, building marketing prowess and generating revenue.
NIXI on the front of the Multilingual internet
Multilingual internet enables users to search for information or make purchases in their native tongue. According to research, more than 56.2% of customers are willing to spend more if the narrative is written in their language. Many users/shoppers find it difficult to make online purchases from websites that are in another language. NIXI noticed When online content is accessible to them in their language and easy to read and understand, users are more likely to also trust the website.
To encourage a multilingual Internet that strives to foster inclusion and a sense of community among various groups by providing each community with its own multilingual website, NIXI introduced IDNs in 22 official languages. One of NIXI’s major projects was to provide Symbiosis University with a website and 1484 email addresses so that staff and students could access and publish content in their native tongue. One of NIXI’s other ideas was to give farmers of Kaleka access to a .भारत domain so they could check crop prices and other farming-related information in their native tongue, making their lives easier and more flexible. So, the .भारत website for the Kaleka Village will also provide these farmers with a platform to express their concerns and challenges directly with the administration thereby bringing in a Digital Democracy.
