Karnataka Education Minister BC Nagesh on Tuesday said mainstream subjects will be introduced in madrassas along the lines of the Uttar Pradesh government. The Education Minister also said that the National Education Policy (NEP) will be introduced, once the learning recovery programme for Class 1-9 students ends in the state.
“We have received recommendations to change the syllabus in madrasas and incorporate mainstream subjects like mathematics, English and science. We will implement this but no decision has been taken yet,” he told reporters at Bengaluru Press Club.
In October 2021, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government in Uttar Pradesh made the teaching of mainstream subjects like History, Civics, Mathematics and Science subjects mandatory.
The subjects were made compulsory from class 1 to 12 of madrassas in UP.
Nagesh further said that they are aware of the reduction in attendance in Urdu schools as the students want to learn more subjects.
According to TV9 Kannada, some parents have also complained to the Education Department that what is taught in madrassas was not helping in the overall development of students.
Many have also demanded that madrassa education won’t be much helpful for the current societal situation.
The minister further said that in the state, nearly 24,000 teachers were counselled on how to behave with students, and how to teach effectively in the classrooms, among other things.
In order to improve education and access to schools in rural areas, the minister said, nearly 60 per cent of new teachers and 35,000 guest faculties will be appointed.
The state has a total of 48,000 schools, Nagesh said, out of which nearly 13,000 schools have less than 25 students.
“Close to 1,800 schools in the state have less than 10 students,” the minister observed.
