Re “$2,500 education grants to those who lost work” (Sept. 25):
I appreciate wanting to help those seeking further education with state help. What I see is another program ripe for fraud. “Unlike other grant programs, this one is self-reported and self-certified.” A quote from the state spokesperson, “We are not requesting any documentation.” What could go wrong? Ms. McLaughlin is to be applauded and am sure the grant helps. I note “she receives tuition waivers” and “additional dollars through Cal Grant.” Now a third source, “Golden State grant.” My question becomes whether any of these programs are coordinated.
Are there bureaucracies with employees administering them all separately? Common sense would be one application and one agency to determine the eligibility for various educational programs. I know, too much to ask.

Giorgia Meloni “far right”
Is it strange to see many news companies labeling the new Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni “far right,” when she seems to be a common sense centrist to me. The main problem seems to be that the leftists are so near the very left edge that the center is far to the right of them. However, it is still the center. The number of people on the far left in Italy and the U.S. is many multiples of the number on the far right.

The migration problem
The Democrats who control both the Presidency and both houses of Congress refuse to revise immigration laws which could solve the migrant crisis.
Why?
As both Susan Shelley’s and Steven Greenhut’s perspectives reveal — because they have a big political tool by keeping the crisis going.
The Democrats condemn border state Republican governors who ship a few of 2022’s two million migrants to northern sanctuary cities despite Biden’s having also transported migrants.
If a Republican does this, it is “inhumane” or “illegal.”
Democrats ignore that border state resources are overwhelmed. Costs for all these non-tax paying migrants are significant.
Moreover, homeless and mentally ill US citizens are largely ignored, when they should have priority on resources spent on migrants.
